Hugh Dennis on dating Outnumbered co-star Claire Skinner in real life

Comedian Hugh Dennis says it's "very lovely" to be in a relationship with Claire Skinner, after they played an on-screen married couple for years in BBC sitcom Outnumbered.

The actor and comedian Hugh Dennis has told BBC Radio 5 Live that it's "very lovely" to now be in a relationship with his long-time co-star Claire Skinner. The two played husband and wife Pete and Sue Brockman in the BBC sitcom Outnumbered, which ran for five series between 2007 and 2014. He says the two actors got together a year-and-a-half ago, after the cast reunited for an Outnumbered Christmas special, with both their marriages having ended. Speaking about the making of the popular comedy, Hugh says much of the dialogue involving the children was improvised, he says "it was the only way to do it because they couldn't read!". He explains that the children would be given an outline of a scene; for example they would be told 'look, you don't want to go to bed, here's your dad - argue with him". However, he says they didn't want to show to become "kids say the funniest things" - he thinks it was "rather more than that" and that the children were "brilliant performers". He also says that by the end of the final series the problem was that the children "don't look anything like the parents or each other".
